What is a hotel booking engine and why do Indian hotels need one?
A hotel booking engine is the software that lets guests book rooms directly on your hotel's website — without going through an OTA. It shows real-time availability, accepts payment (UPI, cards, netbanking), and creates a reservation in your PMS. Indian hotels need one because every direct booking avoids the 15-25% OTA commission.
OTAs bring visibility, but they also take a significant commission on every booking — typically 15% to 25% of the room rate. A booking engine on your own website gives guests a way to book directly, with the full room rate going to the hotel. The booking engine pulls live availability from the PMS, so guests see the same rooms and rates as the OTA, but without the commission layer.
For Indian hotels, the booking engine needs to handle INR pricing, GST-inclusive or GST-exclusive display, Indian payment methods (UPI, Paytm, netbanking alongside cards), and ideally integrate with the same PMS that manages the front desk and channel manager — so a direct booking instantly blocks the room on all OTA channels too.
